Crowns (Caps)

A dental crown is a restoration used to improve and strengthen a tooth. Most commonly, a crown is placed on a tooth that bas been broken, worn down, or damaged due to decay.

Crowns are also called “caps” because they literally cap, or cover, the top portion of a tooth. This means that the crown then serves as the tooth’s new outer surface. Crowns can be made from a variety of different materials, including porcelain, metal, or a combination of the two. Many doctors and patients alike prefer porcelain crowns because they most closely resemble the look of natural teeth and they are also durable.

While a filling is applied directly onto your tooth, a crown is made separately in a lab before we place it on your tooth. We’ll take an impression of your teeth that the dental lab technician will use to examine your tooth shape and bite. Then they will sculpt a custom crown that will fit snugly and give you back full function.
